Becoming Naomi León
by Pam Muñoz Ryan
A highly engaging YA novel centered around Naomi, a fifth grader who is thrust into a tense family situation that leads to an exploration that opens her eyes to the beauty of the larger world, the meanness entrenched in others, and the discovery of her own voice.
The story is tightly woven and well paced. Munoz Ryan vividly depicts the emotions of a child dealing with family dysfunction. At times I felt the material was almost too heavy to read, but I continued on and am thankful. The book pulled me in, educated me a bit, and came to a realistic ending. I started and finished the book within 36 hours - it called out to be read.
My son recommended I read this book; he read it last year. My daughter noticed it and said she is currently reading it in with her class. It is a book that offers lots of discussion points, and has launched my interest in other works by Munoz Ryan.
