Maggie Stiefvater is good at plots and she's absolutely fantastic at characterization. So good, in fact, that readers are willing to overlook the handful of half-baked ideas she has a tendency to throw into the plot like an oddly shaped puzzle piece.

We've all been there, as writers; so enchanted by an idea we've suddenly had that we just cram it into the story without fully fleshing it out, or even abandoning it as silly.

Every series Stiefvater does has a half-baked idea. Heck, usually more than one! Bryde is that half-baked idea in this series, and the Moderators are the other idea. You'll know what I mean when you get there.

In fact, the entire main plot of Mister Impossible is somewhat half-baked. This is unfortunate, as Call Down the Hawk was tense, and mysterious, and full of promise.

Still, she manages to work in some unexpected plot twists, and she manages to make the predictable non-twists at the very least somewhat interesting. Somewhat.

Is it her best work? No. But it's entertaining and readable, especially if you can sit through the big middle part where nothing happens.
