This book, I have nothing but good things to say about this and this a book I will definitely recommend for the rest of my life. Anything Aiden Thomas comes out with, you bet imma read it.
Yadriel is a trans boy just trying to be a brujo like the rest of the men in his family but they just can't see past their traditions. When he decides to take his fate into his own hands he meets Julian Diaz, a spirit who won't leave him be, but he doesnt realize how much Julian will change the course of his life.
This book I feel is so important to not only the LGBTQIA+ community but for the Latin community as a whole. In my opinion, as a Mexican American, the traditions that we hold, we hold onto way too tight. And I understand that the reason why people hold onto these traditions is when they move to the US, they leave so much behind and sometimes the only thing they can take with them is their traditions. But it comes at such a cost to the newer generations. Yadriel loves his family and only wants to be apart of their life and protect them, but because he is different, because he is trans, they dont want to let him in. His quince, something he shouldve done with his family, shouldve been a huge celebration, he had to do on his own with his cousin because of who he is and that is bittersweet.
I loved Julian! He was so unapologetically himself. He’s definitely a character I think Yadriel needed to see because he had this perception of what a man was and a perception of who Julian was and Julian made him question that and helped Yadriel find himself.
I’ll recommend this book and shoot it to the rooftops how amazing it is until I die! Aiden Thomas PLEASE release the second one 😭
