- one of those books that made me upset whenever i had to put it down, even though some of it was so difficult to read and stomach. really made me reflect on how it’s incredible what people are made to survive and how other parts of the country live so outside of my american experience
- the writing blew me away multiple times. westover’s writing is specific but never boring, detailed but never a drag, and so many of the reflections here feel like universal truths about what it means to grow up and become a person beyond your upbringing. so many quotes i’m still thinking about, and i’m very jealous of her ability to blend one theme/story into the next. i do not envy how difficult it must have been to pull the materials and facts for this memoir together
- hard to say what affected me the most but i will say the last 50 pages really felt like the thesis of the book and made me appreciate what education can mean
