The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave

5.0

As someone who loves all things Norway, I was drawn to this immediately when I read a blurb about it. And though it is 400 years in the past, it resonates strongly today. The racism toward, and persecution and genocide of indigenous populations, the toxic and deadly misogyny of the patriarchy, the terrible use of religion to control people and societies, the suppression and demonization of queer love. ... We still see all these evils today, so much so that it was tough for me to get through the book. It brought all the emotional stress of our modern world to the surface and laid atop it this book's representation of it. It's a gorgeous book. Not one to read if you need an emotional, comfy, unstressful time. But definitely when you're able.
