A fresh, original story that blends sci fi, fantasy, and mythology, THE PHOENIX KING is a captivating story about power, sacrifice, and secrets. I enjoyed it from start to finish.
Warrior heiress Elena is set to take the throne of her father's kingdom, but is held back by her inability to use her bloodline's legendary fire magic. Matters become even more complicated when a dangerous assassin is hired to protect her while hiding secrets of his own.
The characters are great. Elena is strong, tough, and willing to do whatever it takes to protect her people. Yassin is complex and tragic, a hero whose motives shift as he changes. I was also a big fan of King Leo, who is as morally gray as they come. All of this to say nothing of the impressive cast of side characters who bring more to this adventure.
I absolutely love the world of Ravence. There is a seamless blend of sci fi and fantasy, making it feel a little like the world of Dune, but with magic. The mythology and culture is rich, which shows in the beautiful settings.
The plot is packed with adventure, the story culminating in an intense finale that leaves the series open for a new chapter in Elena's journey. All of this put together with beautiful writing and eloquent prose, I definitely think this is a sleeper hit. Truly enjoyed THE PHOENIX KING and can't wait for the next book in the series!
