The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon by Brad Stone

5.0

I started this expecting it to be a Jeff Bezos suck up. I was not familiar with Brad Stone's writing so I had no clue how it would go.

It's a fascinating story of Bezos' life and his dead-set focus on making Amazon the biggest thing in the world by serving consumers to a point of fault. He is literally obsessed with having the best product and services, mistreating employees and competitors along the way. This book teaches you there is no black and white in business, and how sometimes people excuse their shitty behavior because they believe they're building something great. There are parallels between Jobs and Bezos as well, kinda making the point that in order to be a legendary CEO you might need to be a sociopath. Kind of sad.

The book is as objective as can be, with a mix of admiration for what the guy has created and disappointment in how he treated people along the way. Brad Stone is writing the sequel to come out in 2021 and I can't wait.
