The Rise of the Dragon: An Illustrated History of the Targaryen Dynasty, Volume One by George R.R. Martin

Are you a GOT or HOTD fan interested in House Targaryen but fall asleep the moment you open any page of Fire & Blood? This is the version you’re going to want to read. It’s all the same content but written in a less dense manner. The throwing around of names flows better too.

Are you a casual ASOIAF fan that’s read Fire & Blood? If you’re looking for new content, sorry you won’t get that here. Undetermined if there are new tidbits of world lore scattered in the side-note sections (I got into a TikTok argument about a line from this book that may not exist in A World of Ice and Fire and I haven’t time to verify those claims). But you WILL get some AMAZING artwork that honestly is worth every cent.

Otherwise, this book is made for the hardcore fans. A beautiful book for your ASOIAF bookshelf collection and an alternative way to reread Fire & Blood without actually reading it. I’m weird and bought this as a physical book and for my kindle but I do NOT recommend buying only the kindle version if you’ve already read Fire & Blood. I only did it because it was on a huge sale (like 75% off) and like A World of Ice and Fire it’s awkward to sit down and read the hardcover (and even though I already reread Fire & Blood a couple months ago, I’ve grown to love the Targaryen family so much I’d rather read a rehash than nothing
