The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Daré

5.0

This book drew me in quickly and I devoured it in just a couple days. At the start, Adunni’s first person broken English narrative takes a little getting used to. But the author (wow, what a debut novel!) does a beautiful job with Adunni’s voice and incredible spirit. This young girl (just 14) endures so much pain and suffering. She is quick-thinking and wise, managing to develop important friendships and alliances when she needs them most. I appreciated that this story is set in present day. So often in my reading, stories of young women like Adunni are set in the past. Her story, though fictional, highlights the terrible problem of human trafficking in a way we need to see. It is heartbreaking. Ultimately, this is a story of hope, belief in one’s worth, and the power of helping other people (in ways large and small). This story was unforgettable.
