Romancing Mister Bridgerton by Julia Quinn
3.0
2024 reread: (Changed my rating to 2 stars) I reread this book in preparation for season 3 of Bridgerton. The audiobook was good, but I found the love story and romance in this book to be lacking. Colin just seems like a total bore who is mad that Penelope doesn't fall at his feet the second he decides that he is interested in her. More time was devoted to the Lady Whistledown angle than to the actual relationship of Penelope and Colin.
2021 review: (3 stars) Colin Bridgerton returns home from his travels and starts to think about getting married. Penelope Featherington has been in love with Colin for the past twelve years. As Colin spends more time with Penelope, he realizes that she is funny, charming, and confident around him. Penelope encourages Colin to publish his travel memoirs, and Colin discovers Penelope's secret (she is Lady Whistledown!). I enjoyed seeing the close friendship between Colin and Penelope develop into a loving marriage. This definitely seemed like a more realistic romance since the main characters don't just meet and instantly fall in love. I wish that the wedding scene in the book wasn't so rushed. I felt like I blinked and missed it. Lady Danbury shined in all of her scenes. It was also fun to see characters from the Smythe-Smith series by Julia Quinn in this book. For fans of Mary Balogh and historical romance books following large families.
