Did not finish book. Stopped at 42%.

Neat concept but I’ve hit the point of not being able to continue. It started interesting, I liked the magical books plot and Cassie the mc in theory. As things progressed I thought the plot and the creativity remained a highlight, but the writing has gotten harder and harder to read. The prose is very clunky, the characters two dimensionally tell not show and varying degrees of cartoonish (especially the evil ones doing evil things because they’re evil), the dialogue stilted, descriptive text and metaphors jarring. I really planned on finishing this but even a few chapters in this felt like an uphill climb, and now that I’m halfway done I’m dreading more of this writing. Such a shame, the concept is really fun.
