To be overly specific, this is probably a 3.75/5. There’s little disagreement that King is a master storyteller, and this epic is no different. In the preface, King writes, “Although it has never been my favorite novel, it is the one people who like my books seem to like the most.” I’d heard much outpouring of love for this one, although I have to agree with King himself—while an impressive feat, this is not my favorite. My complaints are that at times it gets sooooo Godly righteous vs. evil, which I understand as an archetype but tends to bore me in most instances; and also this novel definitely bears the mark of some out-of-touch thinking. I mean, I still read all 1200 pages and enjoyed most of them, but the discourse on black folx/women/Deaf/neurodivergent individuals was cringe-inducing, at times. Still, an impressive and immersive story, which is what I wanted when I pulled this off the shelf.
