This is a very queer graphic novel, although not necessarily in terms of explicit representation. While Blackwell and Goldenloin are depicted as former lovers and implied to get back together at the end , that’s all it really is: implied. I’d argue it’s more text than subtext, but it’s still subtle enough that I could see someone missing it.
Nimona though. That girl is queer as hell. I mean, really the whole comic is. But not in the “two people of the same gender kissed!” way. More so in the “Stevenson’s own queer identity was obviously integral to the development of the themes here and any interpretation of the story that didn’t take that into account would be deeply missing the point”. Also, Nimona herself changes into male forms and seems to identity with them. It’s queer. Plus the wholemonster thing. Suuuuper fucking queer.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go reread the ending and think aboutmanifestations of abuse.
