The Green Mile: The Complete Serial Novel
by Stephen King
Stephen King has always been a hit-or-miss writer for me. Many of his books are very middle-of-the road, and he has more than a couple of stinkers, but when he hits, he hits. The Green Mile isn't without its flaws, its problematic tropes, but unlike The Stand, it absolutely stands up after the third read. This might, in my admittedly inexpert opinion (I have yet to read all of his work), be the best book King has ever written. The story is beautiful and moving, the few frightening parts are tense and unnerving without being campy or cheesy, and the ending—King's notorious weakness—is executed wonderfully, with a beautiful closing line. This book also has the honor of being one of the very few King books to have an excellent movie adaptation to go along with it.
