oh my days. i don’t rlly know where to begin with this review except to say that this book was exactly what i adore: toxic relationships that get pushed so hard beyond it’s acceptable boundaries that everyone gets hurt in the process… this novel is like if fight club (dir. david fincher) met as you are (dir. miles joris-peyrafitte). the prose is beautiful and shattering on every single page, and it takes its time!!!! slow paced yes but in a way that never detracts from the enjoyment of reading it. it’s graphic in its violence, but you know that going in from the title alone. all the characters felt unbelievably real, even down to the minor ones like laurie, joy, and audrey, and i loved how there was so much flip-flopping between julian and paul because it meant that when they were “happy” together (or their skewed version of happiness), it became clear what made them closer, which was pain and indescribable levels of trust. the questions julian asks of paul are maddening. if you like to read abt people beating each other up and feeling sorry for themselves after, this is for you. i feel like i’m going crazy. beautiful, intoxicating, heady writing and characters you want to strangle (but not in the way paul wants). go and read this. NOW!
