amoeller 's review for:
This is a good fill in the blanks book. It gives you some of the little details that were not explicitly stated in the first book, as well as gives background to characters that we've met and how they got tied into it all. In the first novella—Queen Song—we get to see more of how Cal's mother got to the throne and what happened to her once she was there. Her death is lightly mentioned in Red Queen, but nothing is specified. This specifies. More than you would think. Her story, man...I wanted to give her a hug and tell her it was going to be alright. Tell her to stop worrying so much. (Honestly, I wish someone would do that for me, so maybe I'm just spreading my deepest hopes to the fictional. Again.) the second novella—Steel Scars—is how about our girl Farley got into ties with the Scarlet Guard. As well as that one person who is "dead" in most peoples' eyes. I will not mention her/his name for the fact some people may be reading this before reading Red Queen, and I do not wish to spoiler it too much. Other than that, it shows how Farley rose in the ranks, her position among those people and perhaps most importantly: how Mare got brought into all of it.
Recap(?) over, I think. Now, what I thought, briefly, for writing at midnight is never in high hopes for positive ends.
Aveyard's writing was pretty, as it was in her first book in the series, so I have high hopes for Book 2 and beyond. She can create a picture easily. My only problem I might say was that it was too quick. I know, I know, these are novellas, they are meant to be short and to the point, but I wanted to know even more than the barebones that were given. Especially about Coriane. I would have killed to learn more about her life as the princess/queen. About her complications. About her life and thoughts on her new life. I felt that it was just lacking in that sort of stuff. I do hope though more information gets leaked as the books progress. Other than that, I liked seeing how everything was linked together and how certain people got into contact with others. Like I said, it filled in a lot of the gaps one may have wondered about by the end of the first novel. The novellas answer those so infrequently asked questions.
Basically, this is a good bridge between the past and the present of the series. It links most things together in a coherent way. It explains more about people/pasts that had been brushed over. I say, read it but after you've read the first novel, and maybe in between picking up Book 2 so that you have some of that knowledge. It's a quick read, so it won't be too much of a burden to scan through for enlightenment of the story line.
Rise.
Thanks for acting like you’re paying attention.
