I really enjoyed this book. This was such an interesting topic and I loved that this wasn't a cry of "The internet/social media is ruining the young one's language skills!" - it's the opposite. Each chapter deals with a different aspect of language in the digital realm, including the challenges of talking over the internet and how users have overcome them.
I liked the stories about the launch of the phone, and how it had it's own set of issues that people with nostalgia goggles on seem to forget, and the seperation of interent users into groups based on when they forst experienced it. And the discussion with what we use the internet for and how we interact with each other, even a brief discussion of accents that can come through in virtual writing.
I liked that the author talks through things like "lol" "c u l8er" and doge without dismissing them all as silly internet language. She clearly loves her topic and provides a mix of context and lingustics combined with an informal and knowing tone. This book is a great reminder that just because langauge and grammar are changed by our digital world, that's not a bad thing, in fact, it's a really fascinating thing!
From grammar, memes, acronyms, and tone, this book is full of interesting information for any language nerd. If you enjoy the podcast Lingthusiasm you will enjoy this book.
