Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe
3.0

I didn't expect to love this book, but I did. I connected deeply with the character of Crusoe. I really think I learned a lot from the themes of isolation, self-ownership, and self-confidence. I found the adventure aspect of the book genuinely thrilling, and I also greatly enjoyed the whole process of Robinson taking simple raw materials and building some amazing things.

The prose style, including lack of chapter breaks, is definitely different from that of modern novels, and I can see where it would be a roadblock to a lot of the people. Once I got into it though, I personally didn't mind it, and even came to like the unfamiliar style. The racial and gender politics are harder to get over and often painfully cringe-worthy. But if you can mentally cordon them off as artifacts of the time period, you can focus on the human story at the root of the novel.

It's not for everyone, but I enjoyed this book profoundly.
