Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite

“Your life collided with mine, and you simply failed to survive the wreckage”

Been in somewhat of a reading slump the last week or so, and decided to finally get back to it!

Exquisite Corpse is confusing to me, I’m not sure if it fits in the extreme horror genre, the horror genre, or the romantic tragedy genre, perhaps all three at the same time. But what didn’t confuse me was the story, a super ‘straightforward’ tale of two serial killers that end up entering each others lives and making each other as horrid as possible, in an attempt at true love.

I heard that the writing was pretty good, well that’s wrong, because the writing is fucking fantastic, such beautiful and elegant prose that just made this entirely grotesque story feel flowery and delicate. It didn’t quite hit that five star mark for me though as I really thought the ‘meeting’ of the two main characters should’ve happened sooner, I loved that part of the novel but unfortunately it happened more than halfway through. And I really could’ve done with less of the Luke storyline, I get that for the ending it was essential to build his personality and attitude, but I just found him annoying.

Had a really great time with this.

On another note, I’m trying to get back into the groove of reading everyday, I had a slump there for a week or two. But I’m back and am blasting through an audiobook called ‘The Salt Line’. It’s about a world filled with super ticks that can kill you in seconds and it’s pretty easy to listen to so that’ll be finished either later today or tommorow. As for the physical book I’m gonna finish next, hopefully ‘Bad Man’ by Auerbach. Anyway that’ll be all for Exquisite Corpse!

Ps. Look forward to this summer, it’s gonna be the summer of KING.
