Emma by Jane Austen
3.0

As I often find myself in difficulties of falling asleep, I reach for my tablet and switch to the night mode. There, I can read in the darkness and feel the mushy heaviness of fatigue approach. I have, for a few years now, been of the opinion that Austen wrote in a boring way. I can actually remember continuously falling asleep as I read her for the first time. So choosing one of her books for bedtime reading seemed like a good idea.

But she has done it now. I've read too many of her books. I have grown accustomed to her style. The infuriating details of the unimportant conversations and skimming over events that for me would be considered the good parts. I read, during the night, for so much longer than I used to.

I enjoy Austen now. Not out of some artful admiration to her writing, more like listening to a kind friend that can tell a gentle story with a bit of interest and completely without provoking nightmares of any sort.

I have not (as I can recall) seen any version of this book on screen, so it took me a little by surprise how predictable I found the story. I could guess attachments and intrigues with surprising accuracy long before they were revealed but found that I still managed to be compelled to continue.

My verdict is a three for the pleasantness and charm. I will not expound in detail over characters and plot, they are neither as deep as I would wish or as shallow for any reprove. I think it's a book that Austen lovers should be delighted over.
I'm happy I took the time, despite the lack of sleep.
