A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf
5.0

For my first Woolf I attempted to read [b:To the Lighthouse|59716|To the Lighthouse|Virginia Woolf|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1639106809l/59716._SY75_.jpg|1323448], and that didn't go well for my poor ADHD brain. Woolf's essay writing is exponentially easier to read, and not only did she make sense, she also wrote beautifully.

This should never have been a controversial book (when all you're asking for is control over your finances and a private room in which to work, the bar is very low). And yet. The point she makes about people in power, mostly men, wanting to assert their superiority by forcibly taking away other people's freedom to function as individuals is a tale as old as time. She also says that being independently wealthy is a great way to reclaim that freedom, and she's still not wrong in 2022.

Looking forward to attempting to read her fiction again, hopefully with more success next time.
