No matter your political persuasion, you’ll find in Becoming a riveting memoir of one of the most important periods of modern American history. It is infused with Obama’s deep honesty about herself, her values, her self doubts, her family, and black culture on Chicago’s south side of Chicago.
Oddly, although I grew up half Pilipino and half Czech in the midwest, so many of her family’s values were ours, too: you’ll need to work twice as hard, for half as much. Respect and dignity for others. The discipline of education and family life. The value of hard work. There’s a deep cultural overlap between immigrant culture in America and black culture in America. The effort, the striving to better oneself and one’s family.
This was also a critical technology transformation period in America: the iPhone had just come out, camera phones became ubiquitous, Facebook, Twitter, and blogging transformed how we communicate with each other, mostly for worse. Obama’s unflinching perspective on the cruelty of the media was refreshing, disheartening. I have much greater respect for anyone in office—respect founded on the fact that they, too, are people, with families, aspirations, and feelings.
The inside view of life in the Whitehouse was amazing, too. Highly recommended.
