Prelude to Foundation
by Isaac Asimov
Prelude to Foundation features a lot of world-building, but it is not quite an origin story. Disclosing the days from when Hari Seldon was called upon by the Empire for his work in the hypothetical field of psychohistory. This prequel adventure features many discussions regarding the ethics behind predicting the future, underscored by a journey across cultures.
I don't think this story was too compelling, but the setup for the universe makes it readable.
