The Anxious Generation: How The Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness by Jonathan Haidt

challenging informative medium-paced

5.0

Haidt provides the background and stats for why we feel the way we do about social media. Is it really that bad? Yes, he argues, with the corresponding use of smartphones for Gen Z.  Non stop, unsupervised access to platforms designed to
exploit our human nature has rewired our children’s brains. The perfect storm. He also goes back to previous generations to build the case that we have done some of the rewiring ourselves, by overprotecting children and limiting their opportunities for free play. It’s not just girls and social media - internet gaming and pornography are especially damaging for boys. He provides actionable steps to begin the work of correction. A must read for parents and teachers, and for everyone who cares about society, mental health, and child development (all of us?!).
