First horror book I ever read. They told me I was too young at 10, so of course I stole it and read it anyway. They were right. I was so scared of the woods for weeks. We were a big camping/hiking family too. I loved how you never know what's really after this lost little girl, you just know there's something there and she's in danger. 
I have loved Stephen King books ever since.
