This book is pretty confusing. I really like how both story-lines come together in a way. I really like the illustrations. Yet the ending is very confusing. Did Mary kill Ella or was she simply stuck by lightning? I understand that Mary committed suicide but that part still confuses me. The ending made me think that Thornhill worked a little like the Maitlands' house in Beetlejuice. Once you die there you can't get out. I think that the doll concept is a little creepy but intriguing nonetheless. I always thought that Mary was very depressed and if she died she would be happy. Yet she seemed less depressed when she wrote:" ... and hope that one day someone will care enough to read it and that one day someone will understand". This line made her seems less suicidal and more likable to me.
