Eugenides has a remarkable ability to perfectly capture the minds of the "nice guys" who think that they could fix these girls, if they were only given a chance. Not only are the boys unreliable as narrators because they are describing what they thought of the girls rather than what the girls were like, but they tell on themselves in the final paragraphs; just when you think they might have had a breakthrough, that they recognize that they didn't know the girls and couldn't have because they were too obsessed with the idea of them, they call the Lisbon girls selfish.
