Okay, first the things I liked: Honestly, the plot of this book was really cool. The idea and the lore behind the reapers/vampires was also extremely interesting and unique, I‘ve never read something like that before. The setting of 1920’s Harlem for the story was also really great.
Now some things I didn’t like as much:
It seemed a bit like the plot was all over the place? I had some difficulties following it at points, because it just didn’t seem very coherent all the time. The start of the book was a bit slower, but towards the end all the plot twists just seemed a bit messy and confusing. Towards the last chapters, it seemed like the book was coming to a close, only for the next plot twist to pop up again and then for the book to end on a cliffhanger.
I was also really sad, that not more was done with Valeriya/ Sena.
Her character was so incredible interesting, but then she just gets killed off in the end and a random stranger narrates her backstory…
Also I loved Layla so much, I thought her character was extremely interesting, but am I the only one that thoughtshe had more chemistry with Mei then with Elise? Like I did love the main ship of the book, but I really liked the Mei and Layla pairing. It was annoying, that that was resolved by just killing Mei off in the end…
I feel like there was also such a divide between Elise and Layla at the end of the book. I know that the author is probably trying to push the idea of soulmates with them, but they are already so traumatized by each other, that I don’t really understand how that will work in the long run.
What I was also really confused by was Sterling in the second half of the book. After he gets caught in Elise’s bedroom, he just disappears for a while and the comes back and just absolutely hates her and then she betrays him just like that. For the whole first half of the book, they were literally as close as siblings, so that just seemed completely out of character.
In total, the relationships between the characters were kinda all over the place. The two mc’s also kept going back and forth between fighting and pining and lust and love. It was honestly a bit exhausting. You thought they made up and everything was okay, but then the next thing happens and it starts all over again…
I feel like this book kinda had too much, with too little depth. Everything was kinda skimmed, without going deeper.
Ahhh, I gotta give a little appreciation for Elise’s mom though <3 She was soo sweett T^T
Overall the book was still a really really fun read!!! (I mean, how could it not, it’s literally sapphic vampires?!?!) I am definitely looking forward to the next book :3 You can definitely tell, that this is the first book the author has written tho. I would still say that it is definitely worth the read. 💗
