Haunted
by Chuck Palahniuk
Let me first mention that this was the first Chuck Palahniuk that I've ever read, and this book was recommended to me. After reading "Guts", I wasn't too sure I wanted to finish, because that story alone made me sick to my stomach. I had to go outside for a breath of fresh air. So needless to say, I was a little worried. But I finished. And I'm not too sure that I want to read any more of his books. Don't get me wrong. The book was very well-written but just a little too disturbing for me. Granted, a lot of the stories and characters seemed to be rather exaggerated, like caricatures more than real people, and there was humor to be found in all the darkness. But that's just it. Too much darkness. And selfishness. And indifference. This book left me feeling sad and lonely and a little uncomfortable with human nature. Maybe that's what Palahniuk was aiming for: to make us all think a little more deeply about how we treat others and what we would turn into if put in that situation. He showed a side of humans that I think we see more and more nowadays, particularly with all the reality shows that are popping up left and right: that part of us that seeks attention, that seeks fame and fortune, that seeks it regardless of how we manage to obtain it.
