dragonheartbookworm 's review for:
The Lord of the Rings
by J.R.R. Tolkien
It's done. Those of you that absolutely love reading this series, help me understand why? The overall story is great, this is true, but maybe modern fantasy has spoiled me a bit? A lot of Tolkien's writing felt passive rather than immersive.
I'll add a more specific review later but the trilogy as a whole gets 3 stars from me because I spent a lot of time skimming, wondering why the characters personalities differed so much from page to screen, and questioning some of Tolkien's prose. Am I glad I read it? Yes, because now when I mention I love fantasy stories and someone asks, I can say I have read Tolkien (both the Trilogy and the Hobbit!). Will I ever reread it? Doubtful. Will I rewatch the movies some day? Likely.
