Père Goriot by Honoré de Balzac
4.0

Although set 200 years ago, Père Goriot is a hard-hitting portrait of a heartless society driven by money and superficial status. A student, Eugène de Rastignac, gains an education into the dark side of society through the goings-on in his run-down boarding house and entry into the lives of his rich aristocratic cousin and the wealthy daughters of Goriot, another resident in the boarding house. While the style is a little dated, it is lucidly translated by AJ Krailsheimer.
