A Breath of Snow and Ashes
by Diana Gabaldon
I think this series may have "jumped the shark" for me in this book with the storyline about Lizzie. It seemed completely out of character for her. While I enjoyed much of the book, I think the author is grasping for ways to enliven her lengthy books and provide stories for her many, many characters. And I really dislike the use of rape (and by rape I mean sex without real consent) as a plot driver. It reminds me of Disney, where almost every story involves the death of a main character's mother to create heightened drama. In the Outlander series, Diana Gabaldon seems to rely on rape as a way to do the same. It's a shame, because the books are entertaining enough, and for the most part very well written. I'm invested enough after reading thousands of pages about Claire, Jamie, and their family, to want to know how their story ends. So on to Echo in the Bone and Written in My Own Heart's Blood, but I hope for better than I got in A Breath of Snow and Ashes.
