Animal Instinct by David Rosenfelt
4.0

My first encounter with David Rosenfelt's writing, so I'm pretty sure I missed a lot of backstory concerning Andy, Lisa, and Corey (this story's MC). But Douglas as the first-person narrator was quite likable with a dry wit, strong moral compass, and relaxed confidence that comes from being a retired cop (now a PI) with an exemplary record on the force.

The pacing of the plot is slow unfortunately, with much talking about ideas that didn't pan out, witnesses or persons of interest who ended up dead before anyone on the K-team could talk to them.

Rosenfelt did a nice job creating some eccentric, notable supporting characters that didn't fit into the stereotypical modes in many cases. Of course there were the usual thugs as hired killers, and evil "geniuses" who didn't seem all that smart.

The plot was fairly predictable until the last 10% of the book when Rosenfelt threw in a few nice twists that were just short of being Deus ex machina endings

I'll certainly put Rosenfelt's Andy Carpenter novels on my TBR list after listening to this book. Rosenfelt is a skilled writer with solid craft who has created a distinctive set of characters for his ensemble cast. (Although I'm not crazy about Marcus, the group's muscle guy, who only seems capable of grunting. That character smacks of the author trying too hard to come up with a unique angle to his ensemble cast.
