i read this book for a class, and i already want to reread it.

the story of pecola breedlove. a young black girl who’s life is filled with colorism, racism, and so many more atrocities. a girl abandoned by her mother, and raped by her father.

at first, the writing style confused me. as time went on, and i got deeper into the book, i understood so much more. this book is a contemporary masterpiece on so many levels. it discusses powerful issues such as the power that the oppressors or white people have over the black community, even without being present in the scene, the assault of young girls, pedophilia, racism, colorism, and how it all seeps into the bones of the youth.

this book is such a powerful piece. i think that if i read it again, my rating will go up. the story of pecola breedlove is not unique; hundreds of girls have suffered her same fate. it is especially heartbreaking post-dobbs decision, when young girls (and all girls/people with uteruses) got their right to choose taken away.
