I’m going to give this middle grade book the highest compliment I can. It was as good as a novel by Gary D. Schmidt. Oh what a lovely story! In the middle of the night, Fern and her mom leave the sustainable living community they had been living at. For the last six years, The Ranch, as it was known, was the only stable life Fern remembers having and she is not happy to be out in the real world. As Fern and her mother reach California, Fern learns more about her mother’s past and what the Ranch was really all about. This wonderful story is full of fantastic characters and does a great job of showing how important a community is and how many times, we find our true families through the connections we make as we navigate the complexities of this world.
