Double Blind
by Edward St. Aubyn
I found it hard to put this book down. Edward St. Aubyn introduces his characters with such gentle lucidity and striking richness, I found myself in an impossible familiarity and intimacy with each of them. The way he walks the reader around in each of their lives, felt to me like navigating the color and complication of real friendships. Less focused on plot or destination, there is a beautiful and unassuming welling up of interior life here that transcends the unique challenges or privilege of any particular character’s circumstance. St. Aubyn brought me to feel with these people, and I found that I’ve missed them since finishing the book. Reading these pages was a small and precious window into the intersecting lives of friends I now have somehow had.
