Absolutely, horrendously, incredibly, heart-wrenching. I cried for two hours upon finishing the book. I was crying so hard I couldn't feel the line of snot hanging out of my nose. I don't regret it for one second. This was one of the most beautiful books I've ever read. Miller brings you through the sensation of falling in love, and it was pure magic. She took her time in the loveliness (which might, in some books, get old, but never ever could in this one) and wrote the disaster in such a way where it wasn't rushed, but it was crunched and jagged and brilliant. I will never stop recommending this book.
Graphic: Death, Slavery, Grief, Murder, War
