Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher

2.0

When I read this in 2015 I read the whole series and I loved it. But re-reading it there is just so much vulgarity in it. They use substituted slang for the curse words so it's not that. It's the violence, abuse, slavery--especially when it's perpetrated against women--as well as the crassness with which its handled.

I guess the first time I read it I was like 'this badness really exists and I want to see people survive and overcome it' and now I've come across so much of it and the world is so bad in general that I can't stand reading stories with so much unpleasantness. Even if it is realistic. At first I continued on and re-read the 2nd book because I thought it would get better so I don't remember if it's in this book or that one but there is a line in it so disgusting that I felt physically sick. Yes, it's delivered by one of the bad guys. But UGH.

So I won't ever be able to re-read the series now and it has recolored my opinion of all of it. I can't recommend it anymore.
