The Fastest Way to Fall by Denise Williams

5.0

Can we get a hallelujah for the following:

1. Focusing on how a body feels rather than how a body looks? Using fitness in a way that is intuitive to checking in with what your body is telling you/needing, rather than looking on a scale or judging your body to another persons? Actually working through your own fatphobia and negative self talk? Feeling empowered and strong? Not calorie counting or restrictive diets?

2. A dynamically unique heroine who also is black and fat. I LOVE reading characters that are dimensional, and absolutely adored B. Denise Williams did an excellent job with both leads, but I love B more, just saying. Her writing blurbs throughout the story had me tearing up at times, and felt seen. Her humor and online presence was hilarious. She felt real, which is a hard thing to do.

3. Can we also get a a nod of approval for an emotionally intelligent and realistic hero? Love the self awareness, also appreciate that he's not perfect or on a pedestal. Very impressed with how he shut down any of his friends/coworkers saying problematic shit. And also 5 stars for foot rubs and the phrase "how are you feeling?" I know the bar is low for heroes at times, and I should not praise Tube Socks for being a decent human. Still nice to see a non-toxic or bland hero.

5 out of 5 wonderful stars for the feelings this book brought out of me. I had a couple moments where I teared up, which is not the norm for me. I found the overall message of the story inspiring and energizing. It didn't feel preachy or like people quoting therapy lines. There was nuance, there were emotions and vulnerability, there was some trauma to unpack. There was a lot of focus on health, in a non-toxic or harmful manner. The steam was there, yet also very intimate and emotional. Color me impressed.
