I think I might understand ‘morally grey’ now because what do you mean I’m seeing humanity in the mob? Navessa Allen has the excellent ability of creating these characters that you should hate but dropping in these moments of love and humanity that make you realise that people really do contain multitudes and even violent criminals can love! Who’d have thought?

Caught Out is definitely less romantic than Lights Up in its content. These characters do love each other but we don’t get a lot of emotion shared between the two, mostly lust. We’re really taught that they love these past versions of themselves because we don’t get to witness a lot of conversation! I’d have liked to have seen that, seen them fall in love with each other as people rather than focusing so much on their desire, but it was still a fun read.

For me, the real love in this book came from the friendships. Lauren, Taylor and Ryan’s, and Junior and Josh’s friendships are genuinely gorgeous. It’s nice to see such emotionally mature, communicative and accepting relationships, especially between Junior and Josh as men.

I also loved the sex work representation in this book. There is so much judgment wrongfully placed on the industry, and so to see it represented positively and respectfully is nice to see. Equally, seeing said judgment played out on paper and how it is reprimanded and shut down is so satisfying.

I’m so intrigued by the Trocci brothers, and I think I really need a Stefan book now so, if anyone needs me, I’m over here crossing my fingers. Tyler who?
