Shmutz by Felicia Berliner

Another book about religious fundamentalism, after The Satanic Verses. This time instead of Islam, though, it's Hasidic Judaism.

While I enjoyed reading this book, as its equally funny and wistful, I'm not entirely sure what the message of it was or what the author was trying to say. The end was very abrupt and without much resolution of the themes that the author had established. Raizl's dalliance with porn, to me, was her trying to explore and understand her sexuality, which as a woman in the Hasidic tradition is a matter of zero importance. Without spoiling too much, in porn and in real life Raizl seems to be trying to explore not only what sex means to her, but also if she is bisexual. Yet, the ending seems to eschew all of that and forgets all of it. Indeed, the ending could have come at any point in the book, so little does it depend on the events before.

I would definitely read another book by Berliner and again, very much enjoyed the reading of this, but I am confused by the ending and what it means for Raizl's character.
