Daughter of the Siren Queen by Tricia Levenseller

Usually, I try to be at least a little composed when I write these reviews. I try to keep things organized, methodical, and easy to understand. But, every now and then, I run across a book that has me squealing like a pre-teen at a boy-band concert. Can you hear that ear piercing shriek in your head? Good. Me, a 31 year old woman…nearly did that at this book. I did in my head, that counts, right? What I Liked
-Everything. Everything? Everything. Alosa was back and swinging in this book right off the bat. That girl holds nothing back and I adore the decks she walks on. She is strong and fierce and always tries to do what is right, not what is easy. Sometimes she makes mistakes, sometimes things go wrong, but she takes it in stride and does her best to keep her ship and crew safe. I want to be a part of her crew and toss Riden overboard if you know what I mean. *awkward winky face*
-Oftentimes what we find in YA fantasy is that the author is unwilling to kill characters. That annoys me. (I present to you ACOWAR for example. Most of you will understand. I’m still pissed.) Levenseller did not have this issue and I want to hug her for it. Really. Tricia, are you out there? I have a hug waiting for you. Right here. Bring it in. Thank you for not being afraid to tear our hearts out, make me gasp, and I literally choked on my coffee at one part that damn near broke my heart. Look at me dropping hints but not actually giving spoilers. Boom.
-Obviously from the title we can all assume the book involves sirens, right? Not a spoiler but I’ll keep this brief. I loved them. At first I wasn’t quite sure but I came around. Alosa convinced me that I loved them. And her. I’m just saying…
What I Didn’t Like
-Okay, so maybe I didn’t like everything in this book but very nearly everything. In the first book, Riden was an awesome character. Strong, sound morals, loyal, but unafraid to bend the rules. Riden in this one…eh. His character still retained the sound morals and loyalty but he would only bend the rules for love and that made me roll my eyes so far back that I could see my brain. He was also a bit of a pansy. Everyone has emotional baggage but that boy does not know how to carry his. Queue more eye rolls.
-There was not enough Enwen. I absolutely adored Enwen in the first book. He need more page time. That man needed more than a couple of passing comments.
Overall
If you haven’t figured it out by now, I love this book. Was the first book better? I’d say yes but this one was still amazing. We had epic battles, high stakes, emotional and physical pain, love, discord, and an ending that didn’t leave you wondering. I hate when I finish what is supposed to be the last book in a series and it doesn’t feel complete. This felt complete. The loose ends were tied up but you could see the adventure still of the horizon for our wonderful pirates and their amazing captain.
Just from these two books I will pick up anything Levenseller writes without question. Her manner of writing hooked me, pulled me in, and wouldn’t let go. I cannot recommend them enough.
