jelenzen 's review for:
The Rage of Dragons
by Evan Winter
Starting off with the good:
The Setting: 5* - It is so refreshing to see new takes on fantasy worldbuilding, drawing from sources other than just medieval European history. The world Winter presents is concise and engaging, as is the magic that runs through it.
The Hype: 5* - I am a sucker for good action and hype. The build up of the main character and the tension that follows is top notch, and really leads to some "can't put it down" climaxes and epic moments.
The bad:
The Characters/Plot: 2* - I may be overly harsh. This story is not bad, by any stretch. However, it is also nothing new. It is a completely standard revenge plot focused on a character living out a dark power fantasy. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but to truly rate a story higher than this, for me, it either needs to show me something new, or combine disparate elements in a truly beautiful and efficient way.
In summary, this was still a promising first novel from Winter. Interesting and intricate characters and plot are something that will almost certainly come with time. I will still be reading the rest of the series and his future books with optimistic anticipation.
