The Storm Runner by J.C. Cervantes

4.0

Main character Zane Obispo is a great kid. He’s considerate, caring, bullied at school because he walks with a cane, and is catapulted into a world-shaking adventure one day after releasing a demon. His wonderful his rescue dog, Rosie, disappears while helping him while on said adventure. To fix matters, he must travel with a shapeshifter, Brooks, and his enthusiastic, wrestling-loving uncle, Hondo, and deal with duplicitous godborn/demigods, and any number of other wonderful and terrible people and things.
The action and humour are fast, and I loved Zane. I also really liked his older neighbour, Mrs. Cab, who spends some time transformed into a chicken.
This was a really enjoyable melding of Mayan myths with contemporary settings and attitudes, and fun characters.
