This book is the fun version of the deep and intellectual books you’re forced to read in English class. Utterly confusing and weird at first, but slowly develops into something unique, interesting, and yes, deep and intellectual. I have no words to describe it.
Overall I would recommend this book if you’re into magic, a little bit of horror, cliché girl relationship movies like Mean Girls or Clueless, dark academia, a touch of witchcraft, or character tropes. Definitely glad I picked it up. I also really enjoyed Penguin Random House’s discussion questions to reflect on the book and my own interpretation of it.
I went into this book knowing it was a satire, which I think is key if you’re going to pick up this book. It is absurd, but meant to be so. The characters are unbearable and annoying, and meant to be so. It’s about girl-on-girl hate, just wanting to be part of a group, and the validation we all seek from our peers and superiors.
I think I would reread this book to understand it better and to catch all the hints and clues – I did not catch the plot twist at the end, but it makes sense, like all good plot twists should.
There are some loose ends that I think this book does not tie up. Particularly, I would have liked the main character to realize her own lack of agency and confidence and well…slowly begin to change. Instead, she remains the same – believing she is above the Bunnies when she really isn’t. There are missing pieces to the relationship the MC had with the Lion; we never really know what it was or why it was so embarrassing for her. But, I do think it came full circle had a nice finish to the main plot. Just again, wish the MC had a bit more growth to be seen.
