The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

4.0

In all honesty, I really struggled to get through the first half of this book but then when I did, the second half was incredible. The first half allowed for amazing world building and attachment to characters, which all unravelled well in the last pages of the novel. However, I do have to say that I was a bit underwhelmed by the major battle that this whole book took its time leading up to; it seemed to be over in seconds.

The beauty of the representation in this, the fantasy elements, the main sapphic couple, the writing style, and more, all really outweighed those few negatives at the end of the day, and that is why I am still giving this 4/5 stars. When I was struggling at the beginning I kept telling myself "this is so unnecessarily long", but actually thinking back on it, there isn't a single scene I think should be taken out or cut down.

Niclays, one of the POVs, made me cry so much, and I couldn't even give you a distinctive answer as to why. Nothing ever went right for this poor man and it hurt my lil gay heart; someone hurry and give him the whole universe please.

I really did overall love this book, and am happy with the ending- even if I feel like something is missing. I 100000% recommend it to people who have the time, because it is not the best novel to read alongside others or infrequently- you need to dedicate a whole binge for it.
