violentoceans 's review for:

The Quarry Girls by Jess Lourey
2.0

TLDR: Life is short, and while this is fine, there are better things to read.

EDIT: Actually, the more I've thought about it, the more gripes I have with this book. First, the cover. Has no one involved with this book ever SEEN a quarry before? They don't look like shore of a small pond.

Second, the description for this book. 'The boys she met at the quarry.' You mean the boys she's known her entire life? The ones that live a few doors down from her? The ones who have been in her classes and gone to the same school as her, year after year? And the whole 'Heather and Brenda have a secret' nonsense. Like... barely. They barely have a secret and they tell it about three days after learning what it was it was.

ORIGINAL: It was alright. I will say, having been a fifteen year old girl who was nowhere near as boy crazy as many of her friends, the voice does reliably read as a fifteen year old girl who is nowhere near as boy crazy as many of her friends.

Parts of the story really dragged, and it was definitely longer than it needed to be (many of the deli scenes could have been entirely omitted without losing anything).

Also, there are some timeline issues regarding Heather’s ear being burned off. The first time any sort of time is indicated, it heavily implies she was around seven or eight. The next time, five. The final time, three years old.

So yeah. Not bad, but not great.
