A Friend of the Family
by Lauren Grodstein, Lauren Grodstein
WHAT I LIKED:
* Interesting opening
* Some of the characters were complex
* Rick Adamson, the narrator of the audio book, was excellent
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
* The structure and pacing of the book felt manipulative. The introduction set up all these questions and then asked readers to wait until the last few pages to find out the answers. That's a structure I associate with mysteries and thrillers where figuring out "who done it" is the point. Here, though, it distracted me from the narrative and made me want to skip ahead to the end.
* For me, the payoff at the end didn't seem worth all the set up.
