My Year of Rest and Relaxation
by Ottessa Moshfegh
“My hibernation was self-preservational. I thought that it was going to save my life.
I may actually need a few days to process this one so I might come back and edit this review.
My initial thoughts are that I can see why a lot of people didn’t enjoy this book. It’s very depressing, shocking and even funny at times.
It’s definitely not for everyone and I want to note that there is a TW for heavy drug/alcohol abuse, suicide, and sexual assault.
——————
Not a lot happens in this book but I still found myself invested in the narrator’s journey and her relationships. Something about the writing and the story kept me interested.
However, this isn’t a book I’ll probably recommend or think about other than this passage:
“The notion of my future suddenly snapped into focus: it didn’t exist yet. I was making it, standing there, breathing, fixing the air around my body with stillness, trying to capture something—a thought, I guess—as though such a thing were possible…that time could be contained, held captive.”
