Playboy Pilot
by Penelope Ward, Vi Keeland
Rating:2 stars
Overall, it was not a completely bad read, but it was not exceptionally good either.
Up to now I liked all of Vi Keeland's and Penelope Ward's books and sometimes I even loved some of them, so I believed that this one wasn't going to be an exception. But it kind of disappointed me.
Those two authors tend to give more attention to the male lead characters and make them exceptionally likable and kind of write their heroines as an afterthought. The men in these novels have the best lines, the sweet gestures, the smart mouths, the upper hand in sex, the successful career, the women, the money and to top it all of... the great looks. The heroines on the other hand are kind of boring, typical, everyday girls with blah looks and usually don't say much. They just smile and nod to everything smart the male interest says.
That kind of pisses me off.
That annoying feeling started pretty early on with Playboy Pilot.
* Captain Carter Clynes (Aka. Triple C or Trip). Well, that's a cool name. I give the authors that much.
Well, Carter is a pilot and the only things I learnt about him is that he likes adrenaline rushes, the Beatles and sex. As always, women starve for his attention without him even trying. They have no dignity when it comes to Carter. They just run around with no personality or self respect, throw themselves at him and when they see him with Kendall (the heroine) instead of being discreet, like normal women, they remind him of all the great sex they used to have in the past and all but say to him: "Oh please Carter, just have sex with me NOW in front of your new girlfriend!".
What. the. fuck!
Who does that?
I found it completely unrealistic. And Carter was always feeling uncomfortable and apologizing to Kendall because before he met her and was single he liked to have sex with grown, consenting adults. Why should he apologize? He did nothing wrong.
*Kendall. First of all, slut-shaming is a huge NO-NO for me.
She called a whore and a slut every girl Carter has ever slept with. Soooo... if she slept with him that would automatically make her into a whore? Great logic.
And because she didn't want to be like all the other girls she decided not to sleep with Carter. BUT, she followed a complete stranger with a history of using women across the world where she slept half naked in the same bed with him, hugged him, made out with him repeatedly, grinding on his erection, took baths with him, asked him if he wanted a naked hand job by her because he had a boner and she felt sorry for him and went to clubs wearing only a scrap of fabric and no underwear. In Dubai. A country where is literally illegal to roam the streets with indecent clothes. And then whined and cried about being arrested when she already knew that she was doing something illegal.
I rest my case. Kendall is kind of an idiot.
And I disliked her not only for her judgmental behavior but also because she was a hypocrite, a big crybaby and a reckless, spoiled kid. She was born and raised in a filthy rich family, never worked a day in her life and inherited a huge amount of money from her grandfather. Her grandfather's last wish and the only condition for Kendall to take his money was for her to have a son before the age of 26. And of course Kendall wanted the money so much that she was planning on actually having the baby and then giving it away for adoption. Ok. I'm kind of weirded out.
Kendall has more than enough money. Extremely expensive clothes, money to buy tickets to Rio de Janeiro and Dubai and stay in expensive hotels while doing nothing. But it isn't enough. She is willing to have a baby and put it out for adoption to get more money? And she judges other people for their decisions? Yep, huge hypocrite.
So, hence the 2 stars rating.
